Going Green with a Bidet
November 15th, 2012 | By Admin, Bio Bidet, Algonquin IL

Though personal hygiene is the most obvious advantage of a bidet, this bathroom fixture can also become a powerful tool for living a greener lifestyle. Finding innovative, eco-friendly alternatives to everyday activities is important for reducing the imprint that we make on the earth. Using the restroom is something that everyone does every day, and the impact that toilet paper has on the earth is certainly showing it. Every year, Americans go through about 36 billion rolls of toilet paper. With a bidet toilet seat, this number could be drastically reduced. Add an air drying function and you may not need toilet paper all.

One of the great things about pursuing eco-friendly lifestyle alternatives is that they often end up lighter on the wallet than the traditional method. This is certainly the case with the bidet. This investment will pay for itself quickly when you no longer need to pick up toilet paper at the drugstore every few weeks. A single package of toilet paper could last you all year long with a bidet, since you'll only need it to pat dry or wipe off excess mess from time to time. The idea of switching to a bidet can be a bit unsettling at first, but today's attachable bidet makes the transition easy.

With a bidet toilet seat, you can use the bathroom just like normal. When you're finished, the bidet will extend from beneath the toilet seat and use a small stream of water to wash off fecal matter and bacteria. You can choose a bidet with all kinds of extra features as well, such as a heated seat, night light beneath the rim, and enema spray. You can adjust the water temperature and pressure to a setting that you're comfortable with, whether you prefer the spray warm or cold. Aerated sprays are even available for a thorough clean with a soft, gentle spray.

While it is true that a bidet will use a small amount of water, and may use some electricity for the added features, like a warm seat, this is far less than the resources that are used to create toilet paper. Each year, 15 million trees are sacrificed for toilet paper. The production process also uses 473 billion gallons of water and 17.3 terawatts of electricity. Add in the production of the packaging and the emissions from the delivery trucks and you have a large footprint for such a small item. You can help wipe out the need for toilet paper by switching to a bidet.
